ROUTE UPDATES: Argentina "Regular" Flights Restart - #4 of 4 - European, US & Worldwide Carriers - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) Departures - Week of 07-13Dec

The text immediately below this introduction is repeated from previous posting "ROUTE UPDATES: Argentina "Regular" Flights Restart - #1 of 4 - Aerolineas Argentinas - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) Departures - Week of 07-13Dec" to give context to the information regarding resumption of service by other Latin American carriers (non-Argentine) departing Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) in the second half of this posting:

Regularly scheduled airline services came to an abrupt halt in Argentina on 20Mar20 with only "special" flights operated, mostly for the repatriation of both Argentines stranded overseas and foreigners marooned in Argentina, until 22Oct20 when "regular" flights were resumed.

Many special cargo flights were also operated (and continue to be flown), such as at least sixteen Aerolineas Argentinas flights to Shanghai, China that brought back to Argentina massive numbers of masks, gowns and other equipment to be used in the fight against COVID-19.

The resumption of "regular" flights in October was exclusively out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) because the capital's two other airports were and still are closed.

Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) is not operational due to the airfield's sole runway being resurfaced and extended (work scheduled to be finished in March/April) and the reopening of Buenos Aires El Palomar (EPA) was deemed inefficient costwise, considering that Ezeiza is operating well below capacity, so EPA's two carriers, Flybondi and Jetsmart, have been directed to fly out of EZE, at least for now.

At first, only about a dozen "regular" flights per day flew out of EZE but this increased significantly to an average of 47 daily departures during the week of 07-13Dec with a total of 332 flights being operated by all airlines from EZE during that period.

Air Europa A330-200, EC-LNH ? (c/n 551), at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 30Jun15.  The airline has retired nearly all of its A330's in favor of 787-8's and 787-9's.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Services operated during the week of 07-13Dec:

Europe:

Air Europa - Operated 2 flights to Madrid (MAD) using 787-9 - 4 flights per week fewer than normal

Air France - Operated 4 flights to Paris - Charles de Gaulle (CDG) using 3 787-9 and 1 777-300 - 3 flights per week fewer than normal

British Airways - 5 flights to London-Heathrow (LHR), all with 787-9 - about 1 or 2 flights per week fewer than normal

Iberia - 6 flights to Madrid (MAD), 5 with A350-900 and 1 with A330-200 - 9 flights per week fewer than normal

KLMOperated 5 flights to Amsterdam (AMS) using 777-300 - 1 flight per week fewer than normal

LevelOperated 2 flights to Barcelona (BCN) using A330-200 - 2 flights per week fewer than normal

Lufthansa - Operated 3 flights to Frankfurt (FRA) using 747-8 - 4 flights per week fewer than normal

Lufthansa Cargo - Operated 3 flights to Frankfurt (FRA), sometimes stopping in Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), using MD-11F - 1 flight per week more than normal

Martinair Holland - Operated 1 flight to Quito (UIO) - Amsterdam (AMS), using 747-400F - 1 flight per week fewer than normal

Swiss International - Operated 2 flights to Zurich (ZRH) using 777-300

Turkish - Operated 4 flights to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - Istanbul (IST) using 787-9

United States:

American - Operated 7 flights to Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) using 787-8 - same number of flights per week as in the past but with a smaller aircraft than the previous 777-200

American - Operated 7 flights to Miami (MIA) using 777-200 - 7 flights per week fewer than normal

United - Operated 3 flights to Houston Intercontinental (IAH) using 787-9 - 4 flights per week fewer than normal and with a smaller aircraft than the previous 777-200

Worldwide:

Ethiopian - Operated 1 flight to Addis Ababa (ADD) using 787-8 - 6 flights per week fewer than normal

Qatar Cargo - Operated 4 flights to Doha (DOH), sometimes stopping in Quito (UIO), using 777-200F - 1 flight per week more than normal

Comments:

* The 787 series of aircraft is increasingly popular on flights to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) with nine carriers currently operating the -8 and -9 versions to the city's intercontinental airport; Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air France, American, Avianca, British Airways, Ethiopian, Turkish, and United plus possibly two more, Air Canada and Norwegian, if and when they resume service to EZE.  This compares to six airlines flying the 787 to EZE in June 2018.

* Air New Zealand and Emirates have already announced that they will not resume flights to Argentina, either now or when the pandemic is over.

ROUTE UPDATE: Air Europa increasing Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - Madrid (MAD) flights to 5 and then 7 weekly

Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - Madrid (MAD) - eff 04Jul18 -increase to 5x/weekly - eff June 2019 to 1x/daily

Air Europa started flying from Madrid (MAD) to Asuncion (ASU) on 16Dec15 on a 2x/weekly basis using A330-200's, adding on Cordoba (COR) and increasing frequency to 4x/weekly in December 2016 with a planned further increase to 5x/weekly on 04Jul18 and daily flights in June 2019.

Presumably, the idea of including both Asuncion (ASU) and Cordoba (COR) on the route was originally intended to assure profitable load factors on the transatlantic operation but 25% of the passengers traveling on this flight fly between Asuncion (ASU) and Cordoba (COR), which would probably be about 50+ passengers, a seemingly high number for a secondary route and probably a pleasant surprise to the airline.

ROUTE UPDATES: Air Europa, Ethiopian

Madrid (MAD) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - eff 01Mar18 - 24Mar18 - Equipment alternating between 787-9 and 787-8

Back in October, it was reported that MAD-EZE would be the first route that Air Europa would introduce its new 787-9's on with the type being flown on an alternating basis every other day with 787-8's between 01Mar18 and 24Mar18, presumably because Air Europa would be using its one and only 787-9 on the route during that time period.

Madrid (MAD) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - eff 25Mar18 (?) - 787-9 definitively replaced 787-8

Air Europa is currently operating the 787-9 for all of its flights between MAD-EZE, 7x/weekly.

Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - Madrid (MAD) - Frequency increases & no change to 787-8

Air Europa is currently operating on the COR-ASU-MAD route 4x/weekly, with increases eff 29May18 to 5x/weekly and effective 26Jun18 to 6x/weekly.

The equipment change from the A330-200 to 787-8 which was previously announced for 03Mar18 did not take place.

Addis Ababa (ADD) - Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) extends to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - eff 08Mar18 - 5x/weekly

Ethiopian's service from Addis Ababa (ADD) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) that started in 2013 was extended to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 08Mar18 on a 5x/weekly basis using 787-8's.  In celebration of the first flight coinciding with International Women's Day, it was operated with an all-female cabin and flight deck crew.

Interestingly, even before the first flight to Buenos Aires took place, the airline announced that the service would go to 1x/daily effective 25Mar18 with an upgauging from 787-8 aircraft equipment to larger 777-200LR's (an increase of 270 to 321 seats) on 01Jun18, signalling strong advance bookings.

ROUTE UPDATES: New Cordoba (COR), Rosario (ROS) & Salta (SLA) International Flights by Air Europa, Copa, LATAM Peru, Sky

Significant new international service from important cities of the Argentine interior has been or will soon be introduced.

* LATAM Peru - Salta (SLA) - Lima (LIM) - eff 16Jun16

This new service from northwest Argentina is being operated 3x/weekly with A319's.  It is very convenient for travelers to/from the area because it allows them to fly to many international points via LATAM Peru's Lima (LIM) hub without first flying two hours southeast to Buenos Aires to make international connections there.

* LATAM Peru - Rosario (ROS) - Lima (LIM) - eff 01Jul16

This new service operates 4x/weekly using A319's allowing "Rosarinos" to fly via LATAM's Lima (LIM) hub without driving fours hours southeast to Buenos Aires.

* Copa Airlines - Rosario (ROS) - Panama City (PTY) - eff 01Jul16

This city got lucky with significant northbound international service via major hubs starting on the same day.  Copa has started service to its Panama City (PTY) hub 4x/weekly with 737-800's enabling very convenient connections to Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and approx. 12 cities in the United States.

Copa put stickers with the logos of Rosario's two major football (soccer) teams,
Newell's Old Boys and Rosario Central, on one of its 737-800's to mark the occasion as noted in the Argentine blog Rollout Spotting:

http://aerospotter.blogspot.com.ar/2016/07/copa-con-canallas-y-leprosos.html

* Sky Airlines - Cordoba (COR) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 16Jul16

The Chilean LCC is breaking the monopoly that LAN Airlines / LATAM Chile have had on this route during the last 15 years or so that resulted in airfares twice that of typical Buenos Aires - Santiago fares in spite of Cordoba - Santiago being half the distance !  Service will be operated 5x/weekly with A319's.

Air Europa A330-243, EC-LNH (c/n 551), in special Skyteam colors at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 30Jun15.  (Phil Perry Photo)

* Air Europa - Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - Madrid (MAD) - eff 19Dec16

Cordoba (COR) regains service to Madrid (MAD) that it last had when Iberia discontinued serving the route on 19Jan12, which it had operated with A340-300's.

Air Europa's new Madrid (MAD) service will be operated 4x/weekly with A330-200's.

ROUTE UPDATE: Air Europa will reportedly lease a 787 to fly between Madrid (MAD) and Montevideo (MVD) effective April 2015

Airliner World magazine reported in its January 2015 issue that Air Europa will reportedly lease a single 787 from an undisclosed European carrier for use on its Madrid (MAD) - Montevideo (MVD) route starting in April 2015.  However, a quick check of www.flightstats.com and www.orbitz.com shows Air Europa still operating A330-200's on the route through May 2015.

Air Europa will start receiving its own 787's in 2016.

EDITORIAL: Potential Boeing 787 Routes to Argentina & Uruguay

With the ever-increasing number of Boeing 787's being delivered to airlines, new routes are opening up worldwide that were previously economically unviable due to limited demand, such as Boston (BOS) - Tokyo Narita (NRT) by Japan Air Lines and Boston (BOS) - Beijing (PEK) operated by Hainan Airlines.

The 787 is ideal for long-range routes with limited passenger traffic that until recently could only be operated by larger and less fuel-efficient airliners, such as the 767-300ER, A340-500, 747-400, etc., but that were too large for the amount of demand on such routes.

Thinking of Argentina and Uruguay, several routes come to mind that are now served on a limited basis, less efficiently than they could be, or not served at all.

Montevideo (MVD) - Miami (MIA) is currently flown by American Airlines with 767-300's daily in the southern hemisphere summer and 6x/weekly the rest of the year but could probably be served much more efficiently and profitably with the 787 as there are probably many dates when the present flights are not very full.

Montevideo (MVD) - Madrid (MAD) service was dropped by Iberia in 2013 and picked up by Air Europa with Iberia currently scheduled to restart service.  If the 787 were flown on this route the service would probably be more profitable and stable and less marginal like it is now which has resulted in airlines adding/dropping the route.

Cordoba (COR) - Miami (MIA) would be an ideal route for American Airlines with 787's.  Indeed, American was seriously looking to start this route in the early 2000's but put these plans on hold after the 2001 Argentine economic crisis.  Cordoba, with a population of 1.2 million people, is Argentina's second-largest city after Buenos Aires and is known for its universities, extensive farming and its manufacturing industry, especially automobiles.  It is also located in Argentina's geographic center with important cities nearby, such as Rosario, the nation's third-largest city which would probably provide passenger traffic to Miami flights from Cordoba.

Cordoba (COR) - Madrid (MAD) was flown by Iberia with A340's for 15 months until January 2012 but the Spanish carrier dropped the route due to lack of aircraft and marginal profitability despite good passenger loads.  Air Europa would like to start this route through a connecting hub that it is planning to establish in Salvador, Brazil (SSA) for flights from Madrid to several South American cities but it has yet to gain approval from the Argentine aviation authorities.  This route would be ideal on a non-stop basis with the more fuel-efficient 787 probably being a lot more profitable and sustainable than the A340 was.

ROUTE UPDATES: Argentina & Uruguay Airline Route Additions & Changes

Sol Lineas Aereas - Effective 23Dec13

Increased service from Rosario (ROS) - Punta del Este (PDP) to 6x/weekly for the summer season with their Saab 340's.

Sol Lineas Aereas - Effective 01Jan14

Started 6x/weekly summer service from both Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) and Rosario (ROS) to Villa Gesell (VLG).

Conviasa - Effective First Quarter 2014 (unconfirmed)

Luis Graterol, president of the Venezuelan state airline that replaced the defunct VIASA, announced in a television interview that the carrier would start 2x/weekly service from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Porlamar (PMV) on the Venezuelan resort island of Isla Margarita sometime during the first quarter of 2014.

Conviasa already flies from EZE to Caracas (CCS) 3x/weekly using 767's, possibly leased from Vision Air as the Venezuelan airline does not have long-range aircraft of its own.  Presumably the same type will be used to Porlamar (PVM).

Air Europa - Effective March 2014

The Spanish low-cost carrier announced that it will increase its Montevideo (MVD) - Madrid (MAD) flights from the current 3x/weekly to 4x/weekly in March with plans to add a fifth flight on the route in 2015.  These flights are operated with A330-200's.

The addition of more flights would seem to signal that this is a profitable route for Air Europa meaning that they are more likely to stay for the long run. This is good news for Uruguay as Air Europa flies the only non-stop service to Europe from the South American country.

Aerolineas Argentinas - Effective 01Jun14

Starting Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Porto Alegre (POA) daily service with 737-700's.

ROUTE UPDATES: Air Europa to start Salvador (SSA), Brazil Hub to Cordoba (COR), Montevideo (MVD) & Santiago (SCL)

The website of Spanish newspaper ABC reports that Air Europa will start a hub in Salvador de Bahia (SSA) with flights inbound from Madrid (MAD) continuing to Cordoba (COR), Montevideo (MVD) and Santiago (SCL).

The airline has operated 3x/weekly Madrid (MAD) - Salvador (SSA) flights since 2003 and will now increase these to daily with onward flights to COR 2x/week, MVD 2x/week and SCL 3x/week.  The hub will be built up gradually starting in November with flights being added until April 2014 when the full schedule will be up-and-running just in time for the start of the 2014 World Cup, of which Salvador will be one of the host cities.

Salvador, with its tropical beaches is a strong touristic, gastronomic and cultural destination.  A spokesman for Grupo Globalia, owner of Air Europa, indicated that Salvador was chosen for the hub "for several reasons; it has a strategic geographic location, it is an established destination for tourism, and it has an airport and tourism infrastructure that will allow for an increase in the flow (of travelers)."

Air Europa will apparently be allowed "Fifth Freedom" traffic rights to carry revenue passengers between Brazil and the other South American countries. Spain, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay collectively account for 210,000 of the 558,000 annual foreign visitors to Salvador and the regional government of Bahia (of which Salvador is the capital) estimates that the new flights will result in a 20% increase in this number.

ROUTE UPDATE: Air Europa announces Madrid (MAD) - Montevideo (MVD) Service Effective 03Jun13

Air Europa announced on 24Jan13 that it will start flying from Madrid (MAD) to Montevideo (MVD) three times weekly effective 03Jun13 with 299-seat A330-200 aircraft, replacing the Iberia A340 service being suspended in late March.

Flights will initially operate from Madrid (MAD) to Montevideo (MVD) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning to Spain on the following days; Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  Assuming that bookings are healthy, the Spanish airline would increase the service to five weekly flights in the "near future".

A determining factor in Air Europa's decision might have been the decision just this past Monday 21Jan13 by ANCAP, Uruguay's national fuel company, to reduce the price of Jet A1 fuel to the same level of neighboring countries. The higher price weighed especially heavily on operators of long-distance routes, such as Montevideo (MVD) - Madrid (MAD) and reportedly played a role in Iberia's decision to drop the route.

Uruguayan authorities are pleased not only by the new service but also the backing of the Grupo Globalia tour operator group that moves a lot of leisure traffic and will hopefully bring more European tourism to Uruguay.

Editor's Comment:  Will this mean that BQB Lineas Aereas' planned new service from Montevideo (MVD) to Madrid (MAD) with 767-300's will be suspended ?
