ROUTE UPDATE: KLM replaced 777-300 with 787-9 on Amsterdam (AMS) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Santiago (SCL) route in approx. mid 2019

KLM replaced its 408-seat 777-300's on the Amsterdam (AMS) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Santiago (SCL) route with 294-seat 787-9's in approx. mid-2019.  The equipment change apparently continues to this day as the Dutch carrier has operated the type on its authorized "special flights" on this route several times recently (regularly-scheduled flights have not returned to Argentina yet).

The change effectively reduced the number of Economy Class seats operated by KLM to Argentina and Chile while maintaining the quantity of Economy Comfort and World Business seats as the 777-300's have 334, 40 and 34 seats in each class, respectively, while the 787-9's have 216, 48 and 30 such seating.

The economy class seat reduction might be to balance out the increase in number of flights by KLM on the route in recent years from 4x/weekly to 6x/weekly.  The consistent number of premium cabin seating probably reflects the importance of business travel on this route.

ROUTE UPDATE: Flybondi to request international routes from El Palomar (EPA) and other Argentine points

Flybondi reportedly intends to request international routes for start up later this year subject to the acquisition of additional aircraft and the approval of foreign governments.  However, the first step would be for the Argentine government to hold route hearings, which, if they happen, would reportedly likely take place as soon as June of this year.

Flybondi apparently would apply for 200 new routes to add to the 85 route approvals that it already has from previous route hearings, 12 of which the company is already operating with 4-5 more due to be added in June/July and more in the coming months / years.  Airlines normally request many more routes than they intend to operate, mainly to maximize the number of options available to themselves when making expansion plans.

The international routes that Flybondi would like to request include El Palomar (EPA) to Asuncion (ASU), Punta del Este (PDP) and Rio de Janeiro Galeao (GIG)  plus Cordoba (COR), El Palomar (EPA), Iguazu (IGR), Mendoza (MDZ) and Salta (SLA) to Santiago (SCL).

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM Argentina cuts domestic routes for first time; Bahia Blanca (BHI) & San Juan (UAQ) stations closing

LAN Argentina sought to expand domestic operations during the previous Argentine presidential administration but was not allowed to and was not even permitted to bring in substitute aircraft on a temporary basis when a plane from the existing fleet had to be taken out of service for heavy maintenance.

Under the current government, LATAM Argentina (successor to LAN Argentina) can expand freely if it wants to but is not doing so and for the first time ever is even cutting back its presence in the Argentine domestic market as noted below:

Bahia Blanca (BHI) - Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - eff 01Jun18 - ROUTE CANCELLED

Route will be cancelled and LATAM's Bahia Blanca (BHI) station will be closed as a result.  Reason given by the airline is lack of profitability.

San Juan (UAQ) - Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - eff 01Jun18 - ROUTE CANCELLED

San Juan (UAQ) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 01Jun18 - ROUTE CANCELLED

Both of the above routes will be cancelled and LATAM's San Juan (UAQ) station will be closed as a result.  Reason given by the airline is lack of profitability.
