FLEET UPDATE: LATAM airline group has painted at least four of five A320 Series aircraft in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru national tail colors

The LATAM airline group announced in early January 2024 that five of its aircraft would have their tails painted in the colors of its five national subsidiaries; Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.   

As of this posting, at least four aircraft have been painted in national tail colors so far:  

* LATAM Brasil A320neo, PR-XBG, c/n 11725 - The aircraft with the green and yellow-striped tail noted on the first plane in the above photo was the first to be painted with a special tail in January 2024. 

* LATAM Colombia A320, CC-BFE, c/n 5364 - The aircraft with the red, blue and yellow-striped tail noted on the third plane above was the second to be painted with a special tail in April 2024. 

* LATAM Ecuador A320, HC-CPR, c/n 3663 - The aircraft with the red, yellow, blue and yellow-striped tail noted in the fifth plane above was the third to be painted with a special tail in May 2024.

* LATAM Peru A320, CC-BFW, c/n 6135 - The aircraft with the red and white-striped tail noted in the fourth plane above was the fourth to be painted with a special tail in June/July 2024.

* LATAM Chile A320 series aicraft - To the best of your editor's knowledge, this aircraft, with the red and blue stripes on the tail noted in the second plane above, has not been painted yet.

* Sky Airline - Santiago (SCL) - Montevideo (MVD) - Salvador de Bahia (SSA) - 02Jan24 - A320neo - 3x/weekly - Remarks: Route operated under international "Fifth-Freedom" rights, whereby an airline may carry revenue passengers and cargo between two other countries as part of a route that includes an airport within its own home country.  So Sky can fly revenue passengers and cargo between Montevideo and Salvador de Bahia and v.v. as part of their route orginating/terminating in Santiago.

Please note that Flybondi's and Jetsmart Argentina's domestic flights from Buenos Aires would normally fly out of El Palomar (EPA) and Aerolineas Argentinas' domestic flights would operate from Aeroparque (AEP) but both of these airports are currently closed, with EPA possibly not to re-open and AEP likely to be operational again in the coming months when the extension and repaving of its runway are complete.  In the meantime, all three carriers are flying out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE).

The text immediately below this introduction is repeated from previous posting "ROUTE UPDATES: Argentina "Regular" Flights Restart - #1 of 4 - Aerolineas Argentinas - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) Departures - Week of 07-13Dec" to give context to the information regarding resumption of service by other Latin American carriers (non-Argentine) departing Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) in the second half of this posting: 

Regularly scheduled airline services came to an abrupt halt in Argentina on 20Mar20 with only "special" flights operated, mostly for the repatriation of both Argentines stranded overseas and foreigners marooned in Argentina, until 22Oct20 when "regular" flights were resumed. 

Many special cargo flights were also operated (and continue to be flown), such as at least sixteen Aerolineas Argentinas flights to Shanghai, China that brought back to Argentina massive numbers of masks, gowns and other equipment to be used in the fight against COVID-19.     

The resumption of "regular" flights in October was exclusively out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) because the capital's two other airports were and still are closed.  

Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) is not operational due to the airfield's sole runway being resurfaced and extended (work scheduled to be finished in March/April) and the reopening of Buenos Aires El Palomar (EPA) was deemed inefficient costwise, considering that Ezeiza is operating well below capacity, so EPA's two carriers, Flybondi and Jetsmart, have been directed to fly out of EZE, at least for now. 

At first, only about a dozen "regular" flights per day flew out of EZE but this increased significantly to an average of 47 daily departures during the week of 07-13Dec with a total of 332 flights being operated by all airlines from EZE during that period.

Services operated during the week of 07-13Dec:

Aeromexico - Operated 4 flights to Mexico City (MEX) using 787-9 - 3 weekly flights less than normal  

Avianca Colombia - Operated 3 flights to Bogota (BOG) using 787-8 - 3 weekly flights less than normal

Boliviana - 7 flights total (1x/daily) to Santa Cruz de la Sierra (VVI) with 4 737-300 alternating with 3 767-300 - about normal  

COPA Panama - 7 flights total (1x/daily), all with 737-800 to Panama City (PTY) - normally operate 3x/daily 

LATAM Brazil - 7 flights operated with A320 to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - normally have about 28x/weekly

LATAM Chile - 11 flights operated with A320 to Santiago (SCL) - normally have about 33x/weekly (including flights that used to be operated by LATAM Argentina) 

LATAM Peru - 9 flights operated with A320 to Lima (LIM) - normally have about 21x/weekly (including flights that used to be operated by LATAM Argentina) 

Paranair - 3 flights flown by CRJ-200 to Asuncion (ASU) - about half of normal 

Sky Airline - 5 flights flown by A320neo to Santiago (SCL) - normally have about 14x/weekly 

Comments:

In normal times without a pandemic and also the economic consequences to the Argentine and world economies: 

* Flights between Buenos Aires and Santiago (SCL) typically totaled 65x/weekly with another 30x/weekly or so flights from other Argentine cities to SCL compared to only 21x/weekly currently being flown collectively between Aerolineas Argentinas, LATAM Chile and Sky Airline.

* Flights between Buenos Aires and Brazil typically totaled 145x/weekly to 14 airports with another 40x/weekly or so flights from other Argentine cities to Brazil compared to only 20x/weekly currently being flown collectively between Aerolineas Argentinas and LATAM Brazil.  Normally there would also be flights by Azul and Gol.  The sharp reduction in flights reflects the lack of Argentines traveling to Brazilian beach areas.  

* Flights between Buenos Aires and Lima (LIM) totaled 42x/weekly with another 14x/weekly or so flights from other Argentine cities to LIM compared to only 9x/weekly currently being flown by only LATAM Peru (Aerolineas Argentinas normally also flies the route).

ROUTE UPDATES: 50% of Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) international flights move to Ezeiza (EZE) (except Uruguayan flights)

As announced in July 2017, all international flights operating from Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) (with the exception of flights to Uruguay) will be transferred to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) in two phases, effective in 2018 and 2019.

 The first phase commenced on 03May18 with the total number of international flights to Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay operating from Aeroparque being reduced from 222 to 112 operations weekly.  Reductions by airline in terms of weekly flights: 

 Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral - 120 to 60 

 LATAM Argentina / Brasil / Chile - 70 to 35 

 Gol Linhas Aereas - 21 to 11 

 Amaszonas Paraguay - 11 to 6 

 Aerolineas Argentinas transferred its flights bound for Porto Alegre (POA), Río de Janeiro Galeao (GIG), Salvador de Bahía (SSA) and Santa Cruz de la Sierra (VVI) from Aeroparque to Ezeiza.

 Aerolineas will continue to operate from Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) to Asuncion (ASU), Curitiba (CWB), Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), and Santiago (SCL) until 2019. 

The remaining 50% of international flights by all carriers are due to be moved on 01Apr19.

 The purpose of the big move is to free up ramp space and to a certain extent air operations capacity at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) for the increasing number of Argentine domestic flights being added by carriers under the present government's policy of doubling the number of Argentine air travelers in the foreseeable future.

FLEET UPDATE: LATAM Argentina to transfer two A320's to Chile, reportedly on a temporary basis

 LATAM Argentina will transfer two A320's to LATAM Chile at the end of May, reportedly to help make up for a capacity shortfall resulting from many of the parent carrier's 787-8's and 787-9's being grounded to undergo work on their Rolls-Royce engines.

Some sources have claimed that the A320's will directly replace some of the 787's on shorter routes while one Argentine aviation blog has suggested that the replacement is part of a reshuffling of aircraft within the LATAM Chile fleet with some aircraft replacing other similar types, such as 787-8's and 787-9's being replaced with 767-300's, which in turn are being replaced by A321's, which are seeing A320's take their place.  

LATAM Chile is making up for most of the capacity shortfall by wet-leasing four A330-200's and one 747-400 from Spanish charter operator Wamos Air.  There are also rumors that the carrier is leasing in two ex-Singapore 777-200's.  

 LATAM Argentina will be closing two of its Argentine stations, Bahia Blanca (BHI) and San Juan (UAQ), on 01Jun18, thereby eliminating all flights to these two points and reducing the need for aircraft.  The airline said in a press release that the A320 transfer will not result in layoffs (redundancy) of personnel due to an intensified use of the remaining fleet to make up for the departure of the two aircraft.

 LATAM Argentina's fleet after the transfer of the two A320's will be 13 A320's and three 767-300's.

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM Chile, LATAM Brasil, Air Europa

 LATAM Chile will operate between Santiago (SCL) and this Uruguayan beach resort 2x/weekly with A320 aircraft in competition with the Chilean LCC, Sky Airline.

* Montevideo (MVD) - Florianopolis (FLN) - eff 06Jan18 - 25Feb18 - Seasonal Summer Service

 LATAM Brasil will operate between Montevideo (MVD) and this Brazilian beach resort 1x/weekly with A320 aircraft.


* Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - eff 03Mar18 - Equipment Change to 787-8

 Air Europa is due to replace its current A330-200 service on this route with the 787-8 on 03Mar18, initially only until 24Mar18 but indications are that the change will be permanent.

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM to fly seasonally from Santiago (SCL) to Bariloche (BRC) and Punta del Este (PDP)

 Flights to be operated with A320's 3x/weekly.  

Bariloche (BRC) is only the latest Argentine destination to be added to LATAM's international route system.  New airports to be served by the carrier this year include Neuquen (NQN), San Juan (UAQ) and Tucuman (TUC), which will be joining LATAM's international flights to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Cordoba (COR), Mendoza (MDZ), Rosario (ROS), and Salta (SLA).

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM adding international flights to Neuquen (NQN), Rosario (ROS), San Juan (UAQ) and Tucuman (TUC)


LATAM Group announced in April a major expansion connecting "interior" Argentine cities directly to the group's hubs in Lima (LIM) and Santiago (SCL).

Operated by LATAM Peru A320's 3x/weekly.

Operated by LATAM Argentina A320's 3x/weekly. 

* Tucuman (TUC) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 02Oct17

Operated by LATAM Chile A320's 3x/weekly.

Once all of these flights are implemented, the LATAM Group of airlines will offer international flights from nine airports in Argentina; Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Cordoba (COR), Mendoza (MDZ), Neuquen (NQN), Rosario (ROS), Salta (SLA), San Juan (UAQ) and Tucuman (TUC), more than any other airline.

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM Brasil & LATAM Chile - Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - Bariloche (BRC), Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Bogota (BOG), Rosario (ROS) - Santiago (SCL)

 * Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - Bariloche (BRC) - eff 01Jul17 - 30Jul17

 Operated by LATAM Brasil A320's 2x/weekly on Saturdays and Sundays for the Bariloche ski season.  LATAM Brasil had only flown this route on a charter basis in the past; this is the first year that it is operating it on a scheduled basis. 

 * Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Bogota (BOG) - eff July 2017
    
Two additional weekly frequencies will be added to this route making it a daily service operated by LATAM Brasil 767-300ER's.  

 According to Aviacion News, the reason for the EZE-BOG segment being operated by LATAM Brasil is that the air service agreement between Argentina and Brazil allows for "Fifth Freedom" rights, which enables carriers from each country to pick up passengers in the other country and transport them to a third country.  LATAM Brasil does this picking up passengers in Argentina and taking them to Colombia. 

 It would normally have been easier for LATAM Argentina to operate between EZE and BOG instead of LATAM Brasil but the Argentina - Colombia bilateral air service agreement only allows for four flights per week by each nation's carriers and Aerolineas Argentinas already operates the Argentine quota.
