ROUTE UPDATES: Aerolineas Argentinas transferred domestic E-190 flights from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - 16-21Mar21 - Part 1

All regularly-scheduled commercial flights to/from and between airports in Argentina were cancelled between 20Mar20 and 22Oct20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   

Many flights were resumed out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) starting on 22Oct20 with many of those now being transferred to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) due to the reopening of this airport after the recent completion of its runway reconstruction work.  

Aerolineas Argentinas and Jetsmart Argentina were the first airlines to transfer flights from EZE to AEP starting with some arrivals on 15Mar21.

 

Aerolineas is planning to transfer all of its E-190 services from EZE to AEP between 16Mar21-22Mar21 followed by its 737-800 / 700 flights in the coming  days/weeks.

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM Argentina cuts domestic routes for first time; Bahia Blanca (BHI) & San Juan (UAQ) stations closing

 

LAN Argentina sought to expand domestic operations during the previous Argentine presidential administration but was not allowed to and was not even permitted to bring in substitute aircraft on a temporary basis when a plane from the existing fleet had to be taken out of service for heavy maintenance.  

Under the current government, LATAM Argentina (successor to LAN Argentina) can expand freely if it wants to but is not doing so and for the first time ever is even cutting back its presence in the Argentine domestic market as noted below:

Route will be cancelled and LATAM's Bahia Blanca (BHI) station will be closed as a result.  Reason given by the airline is lack of profitability.

ROUTE UPDATES: Aerolineas Argentinas Route Changes - Pursuit of Profitability & Direct Domestic Connections - Part 2

Flights to be operated by Austral E190's.  Bahia Blanca (BHI) is scheduled to be the 16th destination operated year-round by the Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral group from its Cordaba (COR) hub, and the 17th when counting Mar del Plata (MDQ), which is served on a seasonal summer basis.

This route is currently operated 4x/weekly with A330's but will pass to 1x/daily service using Aerolineas' new 737 MAX 8's.  The long range of the MAX series allows for routes like EZE-PUJ to be served by smaller aircraft more frequently and will make routes that are too "thin" on passenger traffic to support  traditional long-range aircraft, economically viable (see Cordoba (COR) to Punta Cana (PUJ) below).

Long-range aircraft are generally large so that they can carry a lot of fuel but their size makes them burn a lot of fuel too, which means that they have to carry a large payload of passengers, cargo, or combination of both to be profitable.  But the new generation of 737 MAX aircraft burn a lot less fuel than their predecessors, the 737 NG series, so they can fly farther on the same amount of gas while only needing to fill 150-180 seats.

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Madrid (MAD) - eff XXJun18 - increase from 7x to 10x/weekly

This route is currently served mainly with A340-300's but the new flights will be operated by A330-200's. 

* Cordoba (COR) - Punta Cana (PUJ) - eff XXJul18 - 1x/weekly

This route, which is relatively "thin" on passenger traffic, is now economically viable using the long-range smaller 737 MAX 8 instead of a larger aircraft like the A330, which was previously necessary for a route of this length.   

* Cordoba (COR) - San Martin de los Andes (CPC) - eff July to September

  

This is a seasonal flight for the winter ski season.

NEW AIRLINE PLANS: Flybondi receives AOC, starts selling tickets, will start flying 26Jan18

New Argentine Low Cost Carrier (LCC) Flybondi is due to start regularly scheduled commercial service on 26Jan18 with its first route being Cordoba (COR) to Iguazu (IGR).

The most recent developments at the carrier:

Start-Up

*  The ANAC Argentine national aviation authority granted Flybondi its Air Operator Certifiocate (AOC) on 10Jan18.

*  The carrier promptly started selling tickets on its website the next day, 11Jan18, claiming to have sold 10,000 tickets in the first 24 hours.

* Flybondi's two-letter IATA code is FO (the letter"O" not the number "0")

* The airline's first route will be Cordoba (COR) - Iguazu (IGR) 2x/weekly using its sole (so far) 737-800, effective 26Jan18.

The earlier that tickets are bought, the lower the fares, with the above discounts having at least a 10-day advance purchase requirement and being subject to availability (buying 10 days in advance does not guarantee these fares).

These routes will be operated by the five 737-800's that it expects to have in its fleet by June (it has one now with four more to be delivered).  Two of the five aircraft will be based in Cordoba (COR) to operate routes originating from that city. 

The airline expects to have 33 routes in operation by the end of the year.

An Argentine federal judge recently ordered the suspension of construction of new facilities to be used by Flybondi at El Palomar (EPA) due to complaints filed by citizens' groups that an environmental impact study should be carried out to determine the effects of the expected sharp increase in noise from ongoing commercial operations.  Nonetheless, construction apparently continues.

Continuing the ongoing expansion of routes that directly connect Argentina's provinces without going through Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral are adding three more new routes, all be two of them seasonal in nature:
