Governments all over the world are making frequent changes to the flights that they allow to operate to their territories as a consequence of the peaks and valleys of COVID-19 cases in different countries.

ROUTE UPDATES: Amaszonas, Amaszonas Paraguay, Amaszonas Uruguay


* Montevideo (MVD) - Cordoba (COR) - eff 27Sep17 - 3x/weekly

 This route started approx. one month later than originally planned.  Amaszonas Uruguay was scheduled to take on a third CRJ-200 for route expansion but managed to start this new service with its existing fleet of two CRJ-200's; CX-SDU (c/n 7209) and CX-LVA (c/n 7561), not having taken delivery of a third aircraft to this day.

Operated with Paraguayan-registered CRJ-200's from the fleet of parent airline Amaszonas Linea Aerea of Bolivia.  However, this service is scheduled to be discontinued soon and might already have ceased.

ROUTE UPDATES: Estelar to Caracas (CCS) + Gol to Porto Alegre (POA)

This airline started service between Caracas (CCS) and Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) using a single A340-300 wet-leased from Hi-Fly Malta. The route was previously flown by Conviasa, the state-owned flag carrier of Venezuela.

Estelar is a privately-owned Venezuelan airline that was founded in 2009 and currently flies one leased A340-300 plus three 737-300's and two 737-200's (not necessarily all active) from Caracas (CCS) to several domestic points plus Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Lima (LIM), Panama City (PTY), Santiago (SCL) and Madrid (MAD) internationally.

VERY RARE PHOTO: Aeroflot Yak-40 CCCP-87791 at Montevideo (MVD) in March 1972

 Just over 1,000 Yak-40's were built by Russian aircraft manufacturer Yakovlev between 1967 and 1981 with the type being operated mostly by Russian/Soviet airlines and military plus their Soviet bloc allies but with many also seeing service with carriers in Africa, Asia, Latin America (such as Bolivia and Peru) and even a handful flying in western Europe (Greece, Italy and West Germany). 

 The Yak-40 had three jet engines and could carry 24-32 passengers over a range of 780nm/1,450km with a full passenger load and 970nm/1,800km with max fuel and had a maximum cruise speed of 297kt/550km.  There were 45 examples reportedly still in service in 2013 with probably a handful still flying today.  It could be considered the very first small regional jet.

 As far as the editor knows, there were no Yak-40's sold in Latin America as a direct result of the 1972 sales tour of the region. 

 UPDATED 07Apr18:  Carlos Abella has written with more information on the Yak-40's 1972 South American sales tour.  According to the British aviation magazine Flight International, in addition to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, the Yak-40 visited Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru with the Soviets claiming that they garnered an order for five examples from Lloyd Aereo Boliviano, although there is no evidence that these were ever delivered.

 UPDATED 25Mar18:  Good friend Carlos Abella, editor of the excellent Argentine aviation blog Rollout Spotting with exhaustive and detailed coverage of many subjects of interest related to Argentine and Latin American aviation history and current developments, posted this article several years ago with many details about the Aeroflot Yak-40's 1972 South American sales tour:

 In summary, the Yak-40 visited both Buenos Aires and Santiago, Chile with the idea of selling the aircraft to airlines of these two countries. 

 The then Chilean socialist government of President Salvador Allende was considering adding Russian-built Ilyushin IL-62 long-range jets to the fleet of the government-owned national airline LAN Chile (today's LATAM) given the country's close relationship with the Soviet Union. The Yak-40 was flown to Santiago to pitch this aircraft type too.

 Argentina's political situation at the time was not very conducive to increasing commercial ties with the USSR with most business leaders being right-leaning but the English aviation publication Flight International reported that the small regional airline, Aerochaco, based in the northern city of Reconquista, Chaco province ordered two Yak-40's with an option for one more.  However, the Argentine government would not allow the aircraft to operate on the Argentine register due to its not being certificated by the US Federal Aviation Administration.  Also, the Yak's operating economics were apparently poor being small for a jet-powered aircraft with only 24-32 seats.  

 A turboprop Antonov 32 was apparently later also demonstrated to the airline but neither type entered service with Aerochaco.  

 Aerochaco later went on to operate two Fairchild Hiller FH-227's (stretched model of the Dutch F-27).

 LATAM Chile will operate between Santiago (SCL) and this Uruguayan beach resort 2x/weekly with A320 aircraft in competition with the Chilean LCC, Sky Airline.

* Montevideo (MVD) - Florianopolis (FLN) - eff 06Jan18 - 25Feb18 - Seasonal Summer Service

 LATAM Brasil will operate between Montevideo (MVD) and this Brazilian beach resort 1x/weekly with A320 aircraft.


* Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - eff 03Mar18 - Equipment Change to 787-8

 Air Europa is due to replace its current A330-200 service on this route with the 787-8 on 03Mar18, initially only until 24Mar18 but indications are that the change will be permanent.

ROUTE UPDATES: Amaszonas Uruguay, Sky Airline, Level and Azul


* Cordoba (COR) - Montevideo (MVD) - eff 24Aug17

 To be operated 3x/weekly with CRJ-200's.  This will represent the return of non-stop service between the Argentine and Uruguayan cities for the first time since PLUNA closed down in July 2012.  

 The planned addition of a third CRJ-200 to the Amaszonas Uruguay fleet, joining CX-SDU (c/n 7209) and CX-LVA (c/n 7561), will make possible both this new service and another daily frequency on the Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Montevideo (MVD) route for a total of 4x/daily weekday services on the "Air Bridge" between these two cities.

* Rosario (ROS) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 03Oct17

 To be operated 3x/weekly with A319's.  Rosario will be the Chilean LCC's fourth destination in Argentina joining Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Cordoba (COR) and Mendoza (MDZ).  

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Barcelona (BCN) - Frequency Increase - eff 29Oct17

The recently started route by new Iberia low-cost (LCC) affiliate Level will increase from 3x/weekly to 5x/weekly flights using A330-200's on 29Oct17.

 The US airline will reintroduce service on this route after having dropped it in September 2013.  Flights will be operated 1x/daily using 767-300's complementing the carrier's nightly 777-200 service from EZE to Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH).   



* Montevideo (MVD) - Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) - Discontinued eff 29Oct17

The French airline has operated this route since April 2013 as an extension of its Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) service, most recently 5x/weekly with 777-200's, but the carrier is dropping it in favor of codeshares with Gol Brazilian Airlines from Montevideo (MVD) through Rio de Janeiro Galeao (GIG) and Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) to Paris.
    

 * Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Auckland (AKL) - Increased Frequency eff 07Nov17

Will increase frequency for the southern hemisphere summer adding a fourth weekly 787-9 flight on 07Nov17 increasing to five flights on 05Dec17 until 13Mar18.

NEW AIRLINE PLANS: Azul Uruguay moving forward on starting operation with 6-8 ATR-72-600's


Azul Uruguay, the planned new Uruguayan division of Azul Brazilian Airlines, has completed submitting the necessary paperwork to the Uruguayan DINACIA aviation authority to demonstrate its fitness to operate as an airline, with the Junta Aeronautica, another Uruguayan aviation agency, next in line to grant the new airline provisional operating authority. 

Azul Uruguay plans to start flying with 6-8 factory-new ATR-72-600's from Montevideo (MVD) to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Porto Alegre (POA), Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) and Cordoba (COR), probably in the second half of this year.  The carrier plans to employ many former Alas Uruguay and PLUNA employees.
