Route Updates - February 2021 - Part 1

Cancelled 50 international flights in February, including some frequencies on these routes:

ROUTE UPDATES: Avianca & Avianca Argentina

* Cordoba (COR) - Lima (LIM) - eff 17Nov17 - APPROVAL REJECTED

Avianca had planned to start this service using E190's but approval of the flight was rejected, which came as a surprise given the current Argentine national government's apparent policy of approving almost all new proposed airline service.  LATAM Peru already flies this route so maybe the government considered that flights by both Avianca and LATAM Peru to their respective hubs in Lima (LIM) would be too much capacity on one route for a medium-sized city like Cordoba.

Mendoza (MDZ) - Lima (LIM) - eff 01Apr18 - 1x/Daily

Flights operated with A320's.  This is Avianca's third route from Argentina with the other two being Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Bogota (BOG), operated 1x/daily with 787's, and Ezeiza to Lima (LIM), flown 2x/daily using A321's and A330's.

* Cordoba (COR) - Rosario (ROS) - APPROVAL REJECTED

Avianca Argentina included this route linking Argentina's second and third-largest cities in its requests made at the route hearings in September 2017 but it was rejected.  Apparent reason given was insufficient traffic on past scheduled flights on the route, which made the request subject to a law prohibiting services on lightly-traveled routes.

It should be noted that Avianca and Avianca Argentina are two separate entities owned by the same parent company, Synergy Group.

ROUTE UPDATES: Amaszonas, United, Avianca

Cordoba (COR) - Santa Cruz (VVI) - eff 14Sep17 - POSTPONED

The Amaszonas group of airlines recently started flying from Cordoba (COR) to Montevideo (MVD) and was scheduled to also start CRJ-200 service from the central Argentine city to Santa Cruz (VVI) on a 3x/weekly basis on 14Sep17 but this route has been postponed until at least December.
.

Newark (EWR) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - eff 29Oct17 - UPGAUGING TO 767-400

United announced in June that it would restart this route, which it dropped in September 2013, with 767-300's 1x/daily eff 29Oct17 but recently indicated that it would upgrade the equipment to 767-400's.

This change appears targeted at the business travel market because the 767-400 has more premium-class seats with 39 vs. 30 in business and 70 vs. 29 premium economy compared to the 767-300.  Both aircraft types have virtually the same number of economy-class seats with 133 for the 767-400 vs. 135 for the 767-300.

Cordoba (COR) - Lima (LIM) - eff 17Nov17

This airline will start service from Cordoba (COR) to its Lima (LIM) hub 1x/daily using A320's in November competing head-to-head with LATAM from the same city to the Peruvian capital's airport, where LATAM also has a hub.

LATAM Group announced in April a major expansion connecting "interior" Argentine cities directly to the group's hubs in Lima (LIM) and Santiago (SCL).

Rosario (ROS) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 01Jul17

Operated by LATAM Chile A320's 4x/weekly.

Tucuman (TUC) - Lima (LIM) - eff 01Sep17

Operated by LATAM Peru A320's 3x/weekly.

San Juan  - Santiago (SCL) - eff 01Oct17

Operated by LATAM Argentina A320's 3x/weekly.

Tucuman (TUC) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 02Oct17

Operated by LATAM Chile A320's 3x/weekly.

Neuquen (NQN) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 04Oct17

Operated by LATAM Argentina A320's 3x/weekly.

Once all of these flights are implemented, the LATAM Group of airlines will offer international flights from nine airports in Argentina; Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Cordoba (COR), Mendoza (MDZ), Neuquen (NQN), Rosario (ROS), Salta (SLA), San Juan (UAQ) and Tucuman (TUC), more than any other airline.

ROUTE UPDATES: New Cordoba (COR), Rosario (ROS) & Salta (SLA) International Flights by Air Europa, Copa, LATAM Peru, Sky

Significant new international service from important cities of the Argentine interior has been or will soon be introduced.

* LATAM Peru - Salta (SLA) - Lima (LIM) - eff 16Jun16

This new service from northwest Argentina is being operated 3x/weekly with A319's.  It is very convenient for travelers to/from the area because it allows them to fly to many international points via LATAM Peru's Lima (LIM) hub without first flying two hours southeast to Buenos Aires to make international connections there.

* LATAM Peru - Rosario (ROS) - Lima (LIM) - eff 01Jul16

This new service operates 4x/weekly using A319's allowing "Rosarinos" to fly via LATAM's Lima (LIM) hub without driving fours hours southeast to Buenos Aires.

* Copa Airlines - Rosario (ROS) - Panama City (PTY) - eff 01Jul16

This city got lucky with significant northbound international service via major hubs starting on the same day.  Copa has started service to its Panama City (PTY) hub 4x/weekly with 737-800's enabling very convenient connections to Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and approx. 12 cities in the United States.

Copa put stickers with the logos of Rosario's two major football (soccer) teams,
Newell's Old Boys and Rosario Central, on one of its 737-800's to mark the occasion as noted in the Argentine blog Rollout Spotting:

http://aerospotter.blogspot.com.ar/2016/07/copa-con-canallas-y-leprosos.html

* Sky Airlines - Cordoba (COR) - Santiago (SCL) - eff 16Jul16

The Chilean LCC is breaking the monopoly that LAN Airlines / LATAM Chile have had on this route during the last 15 years or so that resulted in airfares twice that of typical Buenos Aires - Santiago fares in spite of Cordoba - Santiago being half the distance !  Service will be operated 5x/weekly with A319's.

* Air Europa - Cordoba (COR) - Asuncion (ASU) - Madrid (MAD) - eff 19Dec16

Cordoba (COR) regains service to Madrid (MAD) that it last had when Iberia discontinued serving the route on 19Jan12, which it had operated with A340-300's.

Air Europa's new Madrid (MAD) service will be operated 4x/weekly with A330-200's.

Airlineroute.net reports that TACA will start flying the Airbus A330-200 once-daily on its already existing Lima (LIM) to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) route.  The airline currently flies A321's between the two cities twice-daily using this aircraft type for both services.

The flight schedule for the A330-200 service will be:
