ROUTE UPDATES: Argentina - United States - Nonstop Flights Status - April 2021

Regularly-scheduled airline flights in Argentina resumed in late October 2020 after a seven-month hiatus during which only "special" flights were approved, mostly for the purpose of repatriation of individuals that were stranded away from their home cities and/or countries when regular flights were suspended in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   

In January 2021, the number of COVID cases surged in various parts of the world resulting in the Argentine Government's ANAC national aviation authority issuing an order on 26Jan21 requiring airlines to reduce the number of flights from Argentina to Europe, Mexico and the United States by 30% and to Brazil by 50%, effective 01Feb21.

Further cuts in service were mandated by the ANAC in late March with the goal of limiting international flights arriving at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to one flight every two hours with no more than 2,000 passengers arriving from foreign countries each day. 

The above changes taken together have resulted in a frequently-changing international air transportation scene in Argentina.  As an example, nonstop flights between Argentina and the United States by Aerolineas Argentinas, American Airlines, Delta and United have evolved in recent months as noted below:      

* Aerolineas Argentinas 

The Argentine national airline reportedly restarted service from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Miami (MIA) in late October 2020 with 3x/weekly flights, increasing frequency on the route to 5x/weekly by early December.  

Frequency was increased again in early 2021 to 6x/weekly with a further increase to 9x/weekly flights planned to start on 03Jun21 in response to the strong demand for travel to Miami (MIA) for the purpose of being vaccinated against COVID-19 (limited vaccine availability in Argentina).   

* American Airlines

American's service from Argentina to the United States reached an all-time high in late 2019 with 35x/weekly flights, as follows:

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Miami (MIA) - 21x/weekly flights (including 7x/weekly for the southern hemisphere summer season) using 777-200 / 777-300

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) - 7x/weekly flights using 777-200

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - New York Kennedy (JFK) - 7x/weekly flights using  777-200

* Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Los Angeles (LAX) - 3x/weekly flights using 787-9

* Cordoba (COR - Miami (MIA) - 4x/weekly flights using 767-300

COVID-era Service Suspensions & Reinstatements:

Cordoba (COR)

Cancellation of the Cordoba (COR) service due to a lack of profitability was announced in early December 2019 to take effect in May 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic saw the last COR-MIA flight take place on 16Mar20.  

Los Angeles (LAX)

The Los Angeles (LAX) service was a victim of the COVID-19 pandemic but it was rumored among aviation observers that the flight was not profitable so it might not have lasted much longer anyway.

Service to the three other destinations from EZE - DFW, JFK and MIA - was halted in mid-March 2020 when all domestic and international flights operating in Argentina were suspended by the government-imposed quarantine to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Miami (MIA)

American resumed regularly-scheduled service from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Miami (MIA) in October 2020 with 7x/weekly flights using 777-200's but the equipment used on this route has changed several times since then.  

The airline upgauged to 777-300's on the route, effective 12Feb21, but with the Argentine  government wanting to reduce the number of international travelers, the MIA flight reverted to 777-200 operations in April with a few flights still operated by 777-300's due to the high demand for vaccination travel to Miami (MIA).  Because of the unceasing demand for travel to Miami, the airline is scheduled to once again regularly operate 777-300's on the EZE-MIA route, effective 04Jun21, 7x/weekly.              

Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW)

American restarted regularly-scheduled flights on the Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) route on 02Dec20 using 787-8's, 7x/weekly, upgrading to the 787-9 on 04Jan21.  Due to the increasing restrictions on the number of international travelers allowed to travel to/from Argentina, these flights were cut back to 3x/weekly, effective 01Feb21.  Further cuts to 2x/weekly flights in the first half of April and just 1x/weekly flight in the second half of the same month were made but with an upgauge to the larger 777-200 on the route.  

New York Kennedy (JFK)

American has apparently been selling seats on flights from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to New York Kennedy (JFK) in the hope that the flights would eventually receive approval but this has not happened with the result that passengers have been accommodated where possible on the flights to DFW and MIA, connecting on to New York.    

* Delta Air Lines 

Delta restarted regularly-scheduled flights from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Atlanta (ATL) on 19Dec20, 3x/weekly, using 767-400s.  The airline changed equipment to the A330-300 on 05Jan21, still maintaining 3x/weekly flights until 02Feb21 when the frequency was reduced to 2x/weekly flights.  

Further changes occurred on 04Mar21 when Delta changed the aircraft type to the 767-300 and again in early May to the A330-200, the fourth different type or subtype since service resumed in December 2020.  Frequency dropped to 1x/weekly for a period in April and was then increased back to 2x/weekly in May.  

* United Airlines

United restarted regularly-scheduled flights from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Houston Bush Intercontinental (IAH) on 10Oct20, 1x/weekly, using 787-9's but quickly increased this to 3x/weekly, reportedly on 17Oct20. 

The airline continued to fly with the same frequency and equipment but, effective 01Feb21, only two of the 3x/weekly southbound flights (from IAH to EZE) were approved for passenger travel due to the limits on international arrivals outlined by the Argentine government.  The one other southbound flight carried only cargo.  All 3x/weekly northbound flights (EZE to IAH) carried passengers.      

The latest development for May is that the carrier is flying 2x/weekly on the route without the third flight that was pax/cargo northbound and only cargo southbound.

Please note that Flybondi's and Jetsmart Argentina's domestic flights from Buenos Aires would normally fly out of El Palomar (EPA) and Aerolineas Argentinas' domestic flights would operate from Aeroparque (AEP) but both of these airports are currently closed, with EPA possibly not to re-open and AEP likely to be operational again in the coming months when the extension and repaving of its runway are complete.  In the meantime, all three carriers are flying out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE).

Route Updates - December 2020

The following airlines / flights are confirmed to have started or re-started on the indicated dates.  Most, maybe all, of the services are the resumption of flights that existed prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please note that Flybondi's and Jetsmart Argentina's domestic flights from Buenos Aires would normally fly out of El Palomar (EPA) and Aerolineas Argentinas' domestic flights would operate from Aeroparque (AEP) but both of these airports are currently closed, with EPA possibly not to re-open and AEP likely to be operational again in the coming months when the extension and repaving of its runway are complete.  In the meantime, all three carriers are flying out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE).

ROUTE UPDATES: Delta Air Lines restarted Atlanta (ATL) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 19Dec20

After a nine-month suspension, Delta Air Lines restarted Atlanta (ATL) - Buenos  Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Atlanta (ATL) service on 19Dec20 using 767-400's on a 3x/weekly basis until February when it plans to increase flights to the same 1x/daily that it operated before the pandemic while also upgrading its equipment to the A330-300 due to its reportedly greater cargo capability, which is very much in demand these days. 

Delta is the only US airline blocking the center seats on its aircraft (as a COVID-19 security measure), at least until 30Mar21.

FLEET UPDATE: Fourth ex-PLUNA CRJ-900, CX-CRB (c/n 15169) departs Montevideo (MVD) to Toronto (YYZ)

Portal de America reports that the fourth of seven ex-company owned PLUNA CRJ-900's departed Montevideo (MVD) to the United States (actually went to Toronto) on 13May15, nearly three years after the airline's 05Jul12 shutdown. The aircraft, which flew for PLUNA as CX-CRB (c/n 15169), was re-registered for the flight as C-GMXJ with a white patch covering the old registration.     

Portal also reports that most of the former PLUNA CRJ-900 fleets' engines have apparently been poorly maintained during the last three years and have deteriorated to the point that only one set of engines has been used to fly the CRJ-900's to North America with the powerplants being taken off after each ferry flight and shipped in containers back to Uruguay for the next ferry flight.   

CX-CRB was the second CRJ-900 delivered to PLUNA on 27Mar08.  The airline went on to operate a total of 13 CRJ-900's with seven being company-owned and the other six leased, which were the first to leave the fleet after PLUNA shut down.

Of the seven company-owned aircraft, the airframes that have already left Uruguay are, in order of their departure, CX-CRF (c/n 15204) on 12Jan15, CX-CRC (c/n 15175) on 18Feb15, CX-CRG (c/n 15209) on 17Mar15 and CX-CRB (c/n 15169) on 13May15.  The three aircraft still in Montevideo (MVD) are CX-CRA (c/n 15165), CX-CRD (c/n 15180) and CX-CRE (c/n 15185). 

The seven ex-company-owned PLUNA CRJ-900's will reportedly join the fleet of GoJet Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Trans States Holdings, to fly for Delta Air Lines as a regional feeder under the Delta Connection brand.  The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between June and September this year.   

GoJet has flown regional services for Delta since 2011 with a current fleet of 45 CRJ-700's, of which 22 fly for the Atlanta-based legacy carrier. The addition of the CRJ-900's will enable Delta to further reduce its reliance on uneconomical 50-seat regional jets.

Reader "Mark C" has advised that the seven ex-company-owned PLUNA CRJ-900's will join the fleet of GoJet Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Trans States Holdings, to fly for Delta Air Lines as a regional feeder under the Delta Connection brand.  The aircraft will be delivered between June and October this year.

Delta 767-300 diverts to Montevideo (MVD) after apparent Lightning Strike on Wing

Delta Air Lines 767-332ER, N191DN (c/n 28448/654) flying from Atlanta (ATL) to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) encountered heavy turbulence while on final approach to EZE on the morning of Tuesday, January 21 resulting in the aircraft diverting to Montevideo (MVD).

As the aircraft closed in on Ezeiza International Airport, the captain of the Delta flight announced to passengers that the last 15 minutes of the flight would be "bumpy".  The sky grew darker and the turbulence heavier and the aircraft abruptly broke off its approach climbing sharply into the sky.   Soon after, the captain came on the loudspeaker and announced to passengers that the flight would be diverting to Montevideo (MVD).  

Some thirty minutes later the aircraft landed at the Uruguayan airport but passengers were held on board for three hours as Delta is not authorized to operate to Uruguay and has no staff there of its own.  Arrangements were finally made for the processing of passengers and they were taken off the 767-300 into a lounge area but another three hours passed before they were transferred to downtown hotels.   

Delta sent another 767 to pick up the stranded passengers and fly them to Buenos Aires that evening.

It became evident at some point of the 767-300's flight, either on approach to EZE or en route to MVD, that the right wing's leading edge just outboard of the engine was damaged somewhat significantly, either through impact with an object (such as a bird) or a lightning strike.  Some passengers reported seeing "sparks" come from the affected area while on approach to EZE.  It is also not clear if the flight crew declared the emergency while still on approach to EZE, after the aborted approach, or enroute to Montevideo (MVD).

To the knowledge of the editor of this blog, this is the first time that a Delta aircraft has landed in Montevideo (MVD).  The diversion airport for most flights from the United States to Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) is usually Cordoba (COR) located some 400 miles (650 km) northwest of Buenos Aires in central Argentina although Montevideo (MVD) is occasionally used too.

ROUTE UPDATE: Delta Upgrading from 767-300 to A330-200 between ATL & EZE for Summer 2012/13

Delta Air Lines will be upgrading from the 767-300 to the Airbus A330-200 on its daily Atlanta (ATL) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) route, effective 27Oct12. 

Delta operates the 767-300 in three different seating configurations; 185 Economy + 36 Business, 189 Economy + 30 Business and the "International" configuration of 169 Economy + 36 Business, for a total of 205 seats.   The airline's A330-200 "International" configuration holds 211 Economy + 32 Business for a total of 243 seats, making 38 more seats available on the route during the southern hemisphere summer season.
