FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8 - Fleet of 22 expected by end of 2028 - Details

FLEET UPDATE:

Aerolineas Argentinas took delivery of its 12th 737 MAX 8, LV-KID (c/n 66359/8936), when it flew from the Boeing manufacturer's delivery center at Boeing Field (BFI) to Miami (MIA) and onward to  Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 24Jul24.

One more MAX 8, LV-KIV (c/n 43919/7581) (ex-UR-MXC), originally planned for delivery to Ukraine International, is set to be delivered to Aerolineas before the end of 2024, making for a total fleet of 13 737 MAX 8's flying with the Argentine national carrier by the end of the year.

2016 Order for 14 737 MAX 8's:

Aerolineas placed an order for 14 737 MAX 8's with Boeing in September 2016.

Of this order, five have either been cancelled or delivered as part of the 13 expected to have been  delivered by the end of 2024:

* Two aircraft, LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661) and LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717) were delivered in late 2017 under a "lease financing" agreement.

* Two planes were cancelled and replaced with two other MAX 8's, LV-KEI (c/n 65899/8121) and LV-KEJ (c/n 43321/8051) that were scheduled for delivery to Belavia, the national airline of Belarus, but were ntu (not taken up) because of sanctions against Belarus due to its support of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.  Aerolineas received these two examples in August and June 2022, respectively.

* Aerolineas Argentinas cancelled one more MAX 8 in early June 2024.

This leaves nine more MAX 8's of the original 2016 order to be delivered, all scheduled for 2027 and 2028 handovers, which when added to the 13 MAX 8's expected by the end of 2024, will make for a total of 22 737 MAX 8's in the Aerolineas fleet by the end of 2028.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas (hybrid Ukraine International) 737 MAX 8, LV-KIU, delivered on 07Jun24

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-KIU, c/n 43918/7529, resplendent in a hybrid color scheme consisting of the basic UIA livery and Aerolineas Argentinas titles, taxis out for take off at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 26Jul24. (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas took delivery of the 2nd 737 MAX 8 that was originally slated to be taken by  Ukraine International Airlines, c/n 43918/7529, LV-KIU (formerly UR-MXB) on 07Jun24 after its delivery flight from the Boeing factory at Paine Field (PAE) near Seattle to Miami (MIA) and Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE).  The aircraft is the 11th 737 MAX 8 to join Aerolineas' fleet.

Like aircraft c/n 43197/7450, LV-KIT, LV-KIU first flew in the first half of 2019, but was never  delivered to Ukraine International due to the COVID-19 pandemic and invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022 follwed by the subsequent suspension of all flights by the carrier.  The lease from ICBC Aviation Leasing of China was then taken up by Aerolineas Argentinas.

The plane entered service with the Argentine carrier in a hybrid color scheme consisting of the basic UIA livery and Aerolineas Argentinas titles.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas took delivery of its 10th 737 MAX 8, LV-KIT, on 16May24

Ukraine International Airlines had leasing agreements in place for three 737 MAX 8's from ICBC Aviation Leasing of China, all of which made their first flights in the first half of 2019, presumably with plans to be delivered that year, but they were all ntu (not taken up), possibly postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  However, if any plans were afoot for delivering the aircraft to UIA with the winding down of the pandemic, they were soon put aside with the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24Feb22 and the subsequent suspension of all flights by the carrier.  The aircraft were apparently stored at the Boeing manufacturing facility at Paine Field (PAE) near Seattle painted in full Ukraine International colors and titles.

An agreement later came about between ICBC and Aerolineas Argentinas for the latter airline to lease all three aircraft with the first delivery of  aircraft c/n 43197/7450, ex-UR-MXA to Argentina taking place on a ferry flight on a Seattle (SEA) - Miami (MIA) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) routing departing 16May24 and arriving in Argentina on 17May24.

The plane was still in full UIA colors and titles, but was promptly flown to the FAdeA (Fabrica Argentina de Aviacion) airfield in Cordoba, located just southwest of the city (not the Cordoba (COR) commercial airline airport) for full repainting in Aerolineas Argentinas livery and titles.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas placed fifth (and last) 737 MAX 8, LV-GVE, back into service on 20Dec21

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717), lands at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 11Jan19.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas grounded all five 737 MAX 8's in its fleet when the type of aircraft was grounded worldwide in March 2019.  With the recertification of the type in November 2020, Aerolineas started to prepare its MAX's for a return to service on a gradual basis as air traffic resumed in Argentina.

The first 737 MAX 8 that Aerolineas put back into regularly-scheduled service was LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753) on 23Mar21, followed by LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926) and LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807) on 20Jul21, 05Aug21, and 01Oct21, respectively.

Aerolineas holds orders for seven more of the 737 MAX series for a total of twelve airframes expected to be delivered by the latter part of the decade.

At first, the reactivated Aerolineas 737 MAX 8's were flown exclusively on domestic services in Argentina but have recently been used on regional South American routes to Brazil and Chile, as well, with eventual deployment on "longer" and "thinner" routes with less passenger traffic, such as Cordoba (COR) to Punta Cana (PUJ) also expected, taking advantage of the type's exceptionally long range.

Aerolineas' first 737 MAX 8, LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753) returned to regularly-scheduled service on 23Mar21, followed by LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661) and LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926) on 20Jul21 and 05Aug21, respectively.

The latest MAX to be reactivated was LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807) on 01Oct21.  The sole remaining MAX is LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717) which is expected to return online in December.  Aerolineas holds orders for seven more of the 737 MAX series for a total of twelve airframes expected to be delivered by the latter part of the decade.

So far, the reactivated Aerolineas 737 MAX 8's have flown exclusively domestic services in Argentina with only a handful of exceptions, but they are slated to eventually fly internationally, especially on "longer" and "thinner" routes with less passenger traffic, such as Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Cancun (CUN) and Punta Cana (PUJ).

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas placed third 737 MAX 8, LV-HKW, back into service on 05Aug21

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926) taxis in after landing at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 21Jul18.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas put their third 737 MAX 8, LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926), back into service on 05Aug21, following LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753) and LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), which started flying regularly again on 23Mar21 and 20Jul21, respectively.

All five 737 MAX 8 's delivered to Aerolineas so far were grounded in March 2019 as part of the worldwide grounding of the type stemming from the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines MAX crashes in October 2018 and March 2019, respectively.  The two remaining MAX 8's not in service yet, LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717) and LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807) are parked at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) and Aeroparque (AEP), respectively, and are expected back in service in the coming months.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas placed second 737 MAX 8, LV-GVD, back into service on 20Jul21

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), lands on Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) runway 31 on 21Jul18.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas placed a second 737 MAX 8 (of five in its fleet) back into service on 20Jul21.  The aircraft had been out of service since the Argentinean national airline removed its 737 MAX fleet from service when all MAX's worldwide were grounded in March 2019 in the wake of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines' MAX accidents in October 2018 and March 2019, respectively.
The airline restarted regularly-scheduled domestic flights on 22Oct20, putting its E190, 737-700 and 737-800 fleets back into service on these routes but the 737 MAX 8 was still suffering from the worldwide grounding at that point, delaying its return to service with Aerolineas until 23Mar21, some three months after the aircraft type was recertified for commercial flying once again.

Aerolineas has opted to put its MAX 8 fleet back into service slowly, partly because frequencies across its route network have not reached pre-COVID levels and also presumably to slowly train its crews on the various modifications to the MAX, especially the MCAS software, which was the culprit in the crashes leading to the grounding of the aircraft in early 2019.

LV-GVD and LV-HKU (the first MAX to be reactivated, back in March) are only flying Argentine domestic routes for now, expecting to be eventually redeployed on some of the regional routes the type operated on prior to the grounding, such as to Punta Cana (PUJ), Bogota (BOG), Rio de Janeiro Galeao (GIG) and Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU).

The disposition of the three other 737 MAX 8's in Aerolineas fleet (with six more scheduled for future delivery) is as follows:

* LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717) - Parked at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE)
* LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807) - Parked at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP)
* LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926) - Parked at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE)

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas replacement for E190 fleet still on hold after 737 MAX 8 and then E195-E2 were favored

Austral E190, LV-GIQ (c/n 716), taxis on a beautiful sunny day at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 29Mar18.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas started considering a replacement for the-then Austral and current Aerolineas E190 fleet back in 2017.  Although its oldest E190's were a relatively young seven years old having been delivered in 2010, there were several reasons why replacing the 26-strong E190 fleet appeared attractive:

Arguments in Favor of Replacing E190

Economies of Scale Advantage of Larger and/or more Modern Aircraft over the E190

The next generation of the Embraer E190 series, the E190-E2has a similar seating capacity to the E190 but its geared turbofan engines and many other improvements give it a 12.9% lower operating cost per seat mile than the E190.

The 162-seat 737-800's economies of scale advantage over the E190 give it a 27.3% lower seat-mile cost over the Brazilian-made aircraft.

Similarly, the 166-seat 737 MAX 8 has both economies of scale and the latest technology advantages over the E190 yielding seat-mile costs that are a whopping 40.2% less than the smaller and older plane.

E190 Limited Cargo Capacity

The E190's cargo hold capacity is reportedly relatively small, so much so that there have reportedly been times when it has not been able to accommodate passenger luggage, with many pieces being forwarded to their destination on later flights.

Fleet Commonality - Cost Savings

The Aerolineas Argentinas short-to-medium range fleet consists of the 96-seat E190 and 162-seat 737-800.

Replacing the E190 with more 737-800's or 737 MAX 8's would save Aerolineas on training, crew type rating, spares, and maintenance costs.

New Argentine Low-Cost Carriers operating 170+ seat Aircraft

New LCC's Flybondi and Jetsmart Argentina operate larger 737-800's and A320's respectively, with lower seat-mile costs than the E190, helping them to offer lower airfares than Aerolineas can using the smaller plane.  Switching to 737-800's or 737 MAX 8's would allow Aerolineas to compete with lower airfares, at least on routes with enough traffic to support larger aircraft.

Twenty Proposals for E190 Replacement

In mid-2018, Aerolineas Argentinas requested proposals for the replacement of the E190 fleet from aircraft manufacturers, leasing companies and financial entities specializing in capital equipment financing.

Twenty parties presented proposals in October of that year, including Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, AerCap, Aircastle, Air Lease Corporation, Aviation Capital Group, Avolon, Azorra, Boc Aviation, CFM, Falko, GE Capital Aviation Services, Jet Trading & Leasing, Macquarie, Nordic Aviation Capital, Pratt & Whitney, Regional One, SMBC Aviation Capital and Willis Lease.

Criteria for Lease / Purchase Decision

The proposals were to be analyzed applying the following criteria:

* Cost of Lease or Purchase

* Valuation of Aerolineas E190 Fleet

One of the conditions of the Request for Proposals was that the winning bidder would purchase Aerolineas' used E190 fleet so the valuation placed on these aircraft by the bidder would be an important factor.

* Leaseback Costs of E190's

The 26 E190's of Aerolineas would not be replaced all at once overnight but would likely be leased back from the winning bidder and retired gradually during the transition process to the new fleet.  The cost of the leaseback would be a factor for consideration of the various bids.

* Cost of Transition from E190's to Replacement Fleet

Costs of training flight crews and maintenance staff, spares supply, possible hangar modifications, etc. would be considered.

* Negotiations with Aerolineas' Labor Unions

Also to be taken into account in the bid / aircraft type selection process would be the proposed labor agreements requested by Aerolineas' unions for each  candidate replacement type.

Replacement Aircraft - Most Important Characteristics

* Factory-new
* State-of-the Art Technology
* Lower Fuel Consumption than E190
* Lower Environmental Impact than E190
* Competitive Operating Costs

737 MAX 8 Favored but MAX Grounding Put Plans on Hold

Aerolineas aimed to analyze the different proposals and negotiate an agreement with one of the suppliers within 90 days.  Preliminary reports had the carrier favoring the 737 MAX 8 for its versatility and economies of scale on both short and long-range routes plus the favorable economics of having one family of aircraft, 737-800 / 737 MAX, for all of its short to medium range needs.  A tentative decision was apparently made at the end of 2018 to acquire the aircraft with Aerolineas' board set to meet in May 2019 to approve the acquisition.

However, the grounding of the 737 MAX series in March 2019 after two deadly crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia put Aerolineas' plans to acquire the aircraft on hold.  Although the first planes would not be delivered for a couple of years, ordering a type that was grounded for an undetermined amount of time seemed imprudent so the decision was made to ask the contract bidders to update their proposals once the MAX's grounding was lifted.

Also, the devaluation of the Argentine peso from approx. 20 pesos to 40 pesos per USD between April 2018 and August 2018 effectively made any purchase or leasing arrangement in hard currency much more expensive plus the devaluation  hurt the Argentine economy.  Both of these factors could not have helped Aerolineas to move forward with any plans to replace the E190 fleet.

E195-E2 Favored by New Presidential Administration

Argentina had presidential elections in late 2019 with Alberto Fernandez defeating incumbent Mauricio Macri.  The continued weakness of the Argentine economy and the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the selection of an E190 replacement remaining on hold, even beyond the recertification of the 737 MAX series.

However, Aerolineas' new management under the new presidential administration expressed a preference in early 2020 for the Embraer E195-E2, typically with 138 seats compared to the 106 seats of the E190-E2, the successor aircraft to the E190.  The E195-E2 offers greater efficiency, enabling it to offer higher seating capacity without much higher operating costs.  The E195-E2 is better-suited than the 737 MAX 8 to Aerolineas' domestic route network, which includes many smaller cities that are loss-makers with larger aircraft.

As of this writing in July 2021, there has been no further dialogue regarding replacement of Aerolineas Argentinas' Embraer E190 fleet.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas resumed 737 MAX 8 service on 23Mar21

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753), taxis at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 08Feb18.  This same aircraft operated the first regularly-scheduled flight of the MAX 8 for Aerolineas on 23Mar21 after the MAX's grounding was lifted.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas took delivery of five 737 MAX 8's in late 2017 and early 2018.  The carrier has another six MAX series aircraft on order, for a total of eleven, with the option of choosing which model for the remaining six to be delivered; the MAX 7, MAX 8, MAX 200, MAX 9 or MAX 10.

However, the Argentinean national airline removed its 737 MAX fleet from service when all MAX's worldwide were grounded in March 2019 in the wake of the Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines' MAX accidents in October 2018 and March 2019, respectively.

Flaws with the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) software were identified as having caused the crashes.  After extensive modifications to the MCAS and some other systems during an eighteen-month period, the US Federal Aviation Administration recertified the 737 MAX series on 20Nov20 with several other worldwide aeronautical authorities following suit, enabling Gol Brazilian Airlines and American Airlines to be the first carriers to reintroduce MAX service in December 2020.

The Argentine ANAC civil aviation body announced on 10Mar21 that it was certifying the MAX series to once again fly in Argentina.  Pilots were to be retrained on the updated systems through a combination of Computer-Based Training (CBT) and time on 737 MAX simulators.

The APLA union representing Aerolineas Argentinas' pilots also had to sign off on flying the MAX again, which they did soon after the ANAC approval, noting the union's satisfaction with Boeing's plans to modify the MCAS system and some of the aircraft's cabling plus Aerolineas' plans for training crews on the up-to-date MCAS.

After modifications to the MCAS and cabling, Aerolineas Argentinas did a test flight of 737 MAX 8, LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753) on 18Mar21 that was completed to the satisfaction of the various parties, enabling the airline to put the MAX back into service on 23Mar21 when LV-HKU flew from Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) to Mendoza (MDZ).

The plan was to put only one of the five MAX aircraft in Aerolineas' fleet back into service initially, flying on relatively short domestic routes to allow for the smoothing out of any small issues with minimal disruption to operations.  Some of the routes planned for the first few months back included Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) to Bariloche (BRC), El Calafate (FTE), Mendoza (MDZ), Rio Gallegos (RGL) and Ushuaia (USH).

Aerolineas' four other 737 MAX 8's were tentatively scheduled to return to service in May, July, October and December 2021, coinciding with the airline's plans to gradually build up service to pre-COVID levels.  These aircraft and their current locations are:

LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661): Parked at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP)
LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717): Parked at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE)
LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807): Parked at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP)
LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926): Parked at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE)

Aerolineas Argentinas has six more 737 MAX 8 on order.  While the contract for these aircraft is still in force, the exact delivery dates of the remaining airframes has not been determined yet.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas 5th 737 MAX 8, LV-HKW, arrived at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) tonight 09Jun18

Aerolineas Argentinas' fifth 737 MAX 8, LV-HKW (c/n 44296/6926), arrived at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) tonight at 20:45 hours on its delivery flight from Boeing Field (BFI) via Punta Cana (PUJ).

Aerolineas Argentinas has six more MAX series aircraft on order, for a total of 11, with the option of choosing which model for the remaining six to be delivered, MAX 7, MAX 8, MAX 200, MAX 9 or MAX 10, as noted by the leading British aviation publication, Flight International:

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral likely to order best financial deal between 737 MAX 8 and A320neo

Austral E190, LV-CPJ (c/n 463), taxis in at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 29Mar18.  Austral's E190's are expected to start leaving the fleet later this year. (Phil Perry Photo)

Aviacion News reports that the announced four-way competition between aircraft manufacturers Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier and Embraer for Aerolineas Argentinas' order of replacement aircraft for its Austral division's 26-strong E190 fleet is really a two-way affair between Airbus' A320neo family of aircraft and Boeing's 737 MAX series, given that the airline group has repeatedly stated in recent times that the type chosen will have approx. 186 seats.

Both aircraft are comparable technically and from a performance standpoint, with Boeing's 737 MAX series considered to have the advantage given Aerolineas Argentinas' existing fleet of 31 737-800's and four 737 MAX 8's and the commonality that additional MAX series aircraft would bring.  According to Aviacion News the eventual winner of the contract (expected to be decided in June) might be the manufacturer that offers the best financing package, either through purchase of the aircraft, leasing through an aircraft lessor or a combination of both.  In any case, the winning manufacturer is expected to take Austral's existing fleet of 24-owned and two-leased E190's as part of the deal.  The first of the winning order of aircraft is expected to be delivered to Austral by the end of this year.

ROUTE UPDATES: Aerolineas Argentinas introduced the 737 MAX 8 into service on 01Dec17; future route plans

Aerolineas Argentinas 737 MAX 8, LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), taxis in at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) on 15Dec17. (Phil Perry Photo)

Aerolineas Argentinas' first 737 MAX 8, LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), entered regular airline service on 01Dec17 when it operated a Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Mendoza (MDZ) round-trip service, eight days after arriving at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on its delivery flight on 23Nov17.  Aerolineas became the first Latin American airline to put the 737 MAX 8 into service.

LV-GVD was officially presented to the press at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on 04Dec17 and reportedly operated numerous route-proving flights to several  Argentine domestic airports in late November, including Bariloche (BRC), Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP), Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), Cordoba (COR), Iguazu (IGR), Mendoza (MDZ), Neuquen (NQN), Resistencia (RES), Rio Gallegos (RGL) and Salta (SLA).

Aerolineas converted 11 of 20 737-800's ordered several years ago to 737 MAX 8's which will be delivered in the next 2-3 years.  The next four MAX 8's to be delivered, all expected in 2018 are:

LV-GVE (c/n 64208/6717)
LV-HKU (c/n 44293/6753)
LV-HKV (c/n 44294/6807)
LV-HKW (c/n 44296/XXXX)

All of the aircraft are being leased from Aviation Capital Group.

According to Routes Online (via Eric Trum) initial routes for the 737 MAX 8 in December 2017 / January 2018 include:

eff 10Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Cordoba (COR)
eff 11Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Mendoza (MDZ)
eff 11Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Tucuman (TUC)
eff 17Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Neuquen (NQN)
eff 18Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Iguazu (IGR)
eff 30Dec17: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Salta (SLA)
eff 03Jan18: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Mar del Plata (MDQ)

Additional MAX 8 destinations are planned for mid-2018 including:

eff 02Jun18: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Rio Gallegos (RGL)
eff 03Jun18: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Posadas (PSS)
eff 03Jun18: Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - San Juan (UAQ)

These dates / destinations are subject to change plus flightradar24.com has shown LV-GVD operating flights to Resistencia (RES) that is not on the above lists.

With its increased range over the the 737-800, the 737 MAX 8 is also expected to be deployed on routes from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) and/or Cordoba (COR) non-stop to the Caribbean / Mexico with the most likely candidate destinations being Cancun (CUN) and Punta Cana (PUJ), currently served by Aerolineas A330's, which are apparently too large for demand on these routes.  Aerolineas' existing 737-800 fleet does not have the range to operate these services non-stop.

Aerolineas Argentinas first 737 MAX 8, LV-GVD (c/n 64207/6661), arrived at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) on its delivery flight in the late afternoon of 23Nov17.  This is the first of five 737 MAX 8's to be delivered to the Argentine national airline in the coming months.

The MAX 8's were part of an earlier order by the carrier for 737-800's but they were converted to MAX 8's sometime during the last year or so.  All of the MAX 8's are being leased from Aviation Capital Group of Newport Beach, California, USA

Aerolineas Argentinas' first 737 MAX 8 has been painted in full company colors and is soon to start flight testing prior to delivery to the airline in mid-November with an expected arrival in Argentina in about three weeks' time.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas' long-range fleet plans A340, A330, 737 MAX 8

Aerolineas Argentinas A340-313X, LV-FPV (c/n 193), in Skyteam colors will be one of the last two Aerolineas A340's to be retired from the fleet. (Phil Perry Collection)

Aerolineas Argentinas officially has six A340-300's remaining in its fleet but two are reportedly parked in the desert in the United States with two more to be retired in the coming months and two more with recently renovated interiors expected to stay in service with the Argentine national airline for another year.

Referring to airfleets.net, A340-313X, LV-CSD (c/n 123) and A340-313X, LV-CSF (c/n 128) both ex-Singapore and Cathay Pacific examples, are apparently the aircraft that will be retired in December 2017 and March 2018.

The two A340-300's on lease from Iberia, A340-313X, LV-FPU (c/n 170) and A340-313X, LV-FPV (c/n 193), the latter painted in Skyteam colors, have had their interiors remodeled and will stay in service until December 2018, reportedly flying mostly from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Cancun (CUN), Barcelona (BCN) and Madrid (MAD).

The carrier's A330's will cover Aerolineas' other intercontinental routes to Miami (MIA), New York-Kennedy (JFK) and Rome-Fiumicino (FCO).  Once the A340's are gone, the A330's will operate all of Aerolineas' intercontinental routes plus many routes in the Americas that are beyond the range of the carrier's 737-800 fleet, at least until Aerolineas starts taking delivery of the longer-range 737 MAX 8, which will be deployed on routes such as Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Bogota (BOG) and Punta Cana (PUJ).
