ROUTE UPDATES: Aerolineas Argentinas transferred domestic 737-700 / 800 flights from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - 22-27Mar21 - Part 1

All regularly-scheduled commercial flights to/from and between airports in Argentina were cancelled between 20Mar20 and 22Oct20 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.    

Many flights were resumed out of Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) starting on 22Oct20 with many of those now being transferred to Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) due to the reopening of this airport after the recent completion of its runway reconstruction work.  

Aerolineas Argentinas transferred all of its E-190 services from EZE to AEP between 16Mar21-21Mar21 to be followed by its 737-800 / 700 flights on 22-27Mar21:

NEW AIRLINE PLANS: Grupo LASA to request 5 routes at 06Sep17 Route Hearings

The Grupo LASA that is planning to participate in the 06Sep17 Argentine route hearings is presumably the same company as the bus operator based in Azul, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.  

The proposed carrier plans to present an exceedingly modest list of only five route requests compared to the much larger requests of airlines such, as Buenos Aires International Airlines, which plans to ask for authorization of up to 178 routes !     

Grupo LASA plans to operate ATR-42-300's on "Corridor" style routes linking multiple cities on linear or circular-shaped routes in the southern Patagonia region of Argentina focused mainly on Comodoro Rivadavia (CRD) and Neuquen (NQN).

The routes that will be requested are:

This service, which is currently operated by Austral using E190's on a Cordoba (COR) - Rio Cuarto (RCU) - Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) basis with 1x/daily round-trip will see the Cordoba (COR) legs dropped and will instead be operated 2x/daily from AEP to RCU round-trip, still by Austral E190's.

Operated by Austral E190's, presumably 1x/daily.  This flight will depart EZE at mid-morning to allow connections from intercontinental flights to points along the east coast of Argentina all the way south to Ushuaia (USH).  

This concept is similar to the other three "corredor" multi-leg routes that Aerolineas operates connecting "interior" cities of the country; the "Sur", "Norte", and "Petrolero" with the latter connecting points related to the Argentine oil industry.

Sol Lineas Aereas - The Final Months - Part 1 of 3 - Three CRJ-200's Delivered

This blog's last posting on Sol Lineas Aereas was in late September 2015 when the airline was seemingly embarking on an exciting new era of expansion and jet service but, sadly, only a little over three months later, Sol, was shut down by its ownership on 15Jan16.

Three CRJ-200's delivered (of six that were planned)

Sol took delivery of its first CRJ-200ER, registered EC-IVH (c/n 7915), from Air Nostrum on 20Sep15.  Surprisingly, the aircraft was not painted in the blue and orange colors of Sol, but in a scheme almost identical to that of Aerolineas Argentinas' sister carrier Austral Lineas Aereas, with the exception of a different tail logo and Sol titles instead of Austral.  This livery reflected that Sol was to assume the role of a regional carrier covering low-density routes for Aerolineas Argentinas and Austral and feeding the two carriers' flights at Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) and potentially other cities.  

The resemblance was not lost on Austral's pilot's union, UALA, long a rival of Aerolineas pilots' union, that interpreted the similarity of schemes as an indication that Sol might take over much of the Argentine domestic flying done by Austral's E190's.  Strong objections and tensions between UALA and Aerolineas / Austral management ensued.        

The aircraft was re-registered as LV-GIH and, after some training and route trials, it entered service on 19Oct15 on "El Corredor Petrolero" (The Oil Corridor) flying from Rosario (ROS) - Cordoba (COR) - Neuquen (NQN) - Comodoro Rivadavia (CRD) and back, so named because much of the passenger traffic going to the latter two cities is oil-related business travel.  Flight crews were said to be a mix of Argentine and Spanish nationals. 

Two more CRJ-200ER's were delivered by Air Nostrum to Sol, EC-JCL (c/n 7975), which was re-registered as LV-GII, in late October and EC-HSH (c/n 7466), later becoming LV-GIJ, in December.  Both aircraft were also painted in the Austral-style scheme.

In addition to "The Oil Corridor", Sol planned to fly at least the following routes (and apparently started some prior to shutdown):

Air Nostrum buys Shareholding of Sol

In addition to the agreement with Aerolineas, a key factor in Sol's new undertaking was the participation of the Spanish regional carrier, Air Nostrum, which was granted a 45% (some say 49%) share of Sol in exchange for the six CRJ-200's that the carrier was due to give Sol, plus corresponding training, maintenance and spares support.

Air Nostrum was establishing a new business unit, Air Nostrum Technics Americas, based in Paraguay to provide maintenance and spares support to operators of Bombardier, ATR, and CASA aircraft in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay.  Amaszonas of Bolivia and Amaszonas Paraguay are customers and Sol was to be one too.  In addition, the existence of this new business venture created an outlet for Air Nostrum to dispose of its CRJ-200 fleet, which was redundant to its needs.

More Details: Sol Lineas Aereas Marketing Agreement with Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral

Sol Lineas Aereas' first CRJ-200, EC-IVH (c/n 7915), is due to enter service with the carrier on October 18 or 19 on the "Petroleum Route"; Buenos Aires Aeroparque (AEP) - Rosario (ROS) - Cordoba (COR) - Neuquen (NQN) - Comodoro Rivadavia (CRD), so named because Neuquen and Comodoro Rivadavia are important oil industry centers in Argentina's Patagonia region.   

In addition to serving as a feeder to existing Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral services, Sol will use the six CRJ-200's that it is due to receive in the coming months to fly some of the "thinner" routes that do not have enough traffic to support the use of AR/AU's larger jets plus open up new services, which typically take time to develop for the use of larger aircraft.

The Uruguayan travel blog Portal de America reports that AR/AU has agreed to pay Sol guaranteed fixed rates per block hour of US$ 3,144 for its Saab 340's and US$ 3,885 for its CRJ-200's, which at six hours per day for a 31-day month total US$ 584,784 and US$ 722,610, respectively.  "Portal" contends that this amounts to a subsidy with AR/AU effectively absorbing the Sol operation, but the agreement is similar to arrangements that US carriers have had with their feeders so this would be a matter of debate.

ROUTE UPDATE: Austral starts "Corredor Petrolero" Routing with EMB-190's Today

Updating the March 25, 2012 post:

Austral is starting today (June 1) a semicircular routing starting in COR all the way to CRD and back in the opposite direction:

Cordoba (COR) - Mendoza (MDZ) - Neuquen (NQN) - Comodoro Rivadavia (CRD) on 1,3,5 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)

Previously it was announced that the route would start at Buenos Aires - Ezeiza (EZE) and circle all the way back to there.

The routing now has a name "Corredor Petrolero" with all of the cities on the route, except Cordoba, being a part of Argentina's oil industry. 

The new service is very similar to a route presently being flown by SOL Lineas Aereas, a small private carrier, with Saab 340's.  Presumably the airline has been successful on the route possibly giving Aerolineas Argentinas / Austral the idea of operating it themselves.

ROUTE UPDATES: Austral Starting Route Connecting "Internal" Argentine Cities

Austral recently announced that on 01Jun12 it will start two flights similar to the "Corredor Norte" service initiated by sister airline Aerolineas Argentinas on 18Aug10. 

Air transportation in Argentina has traditionally been centered on Buenos Aires with nearly all domestic flights originating or terminating at one of the city's two main airports, Aeroparque or Ezeiza.  However, the introduction of Aerolineas' "Corredor Norte" in 2010 alleviated the inconvenience this caused foreign tourists and travelers from the country's "interior" by offering a circular Buenos Aires-Aeroparque (AEP) - Puerto Iguazu (IGR) - Salta (SLA) - Mendoza (MDZ) - Bariloche (BRC) - Buenos Aires-Aeroparque (AEP) routing.

All of these cities are attractive to tourists with Iguazu's famous falls, Salta's high desert and indigenous culture, Mendoza's wine country, and Bariloche's lake district and skiing areas.   Previously, tourists that wanted to visit two or more of these regions had to backtrack to Buenos Aires to fly to each additional area they wanted to visit.   Aerolineas' flying the "Corredor Norte" twice per week in each direction has made it much easier to visit Argentina's key attractions plus Argentine travelers can also travel more easily within their own country.

The new routes that are similar to the "Corredor Norte" to be introduced by Austral are:

Buenos Aires - Ezeiza (EZE) - Cordoba (COR) - Mendoza (MDZ) - Neuquen (NQN) - Comodoro Rivadavia (CRD) on 135 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday).

Buenos Aires - Ezeiza (EZE) - Cordoba (COR) - Mendoza (MDZ) - Bariloche (BRC) x135 (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday).  

Both routes will be flown with the carrier's new EMB-190 fleet.

While Cordoba is not generally a tourist destination for foreigners, it is Argentina's second-largest city so there is a lot of demand going there. Mendoza is an important tourist center as well as being the country's fourth largest city, and both Neuquen and Bariloche are significant tourist destinations in Rio Negro province.   

Instead of being flown as circle routes from Buenos Aires all the way around to Buenos Aires, both flights will be operated to the end point and then flown in the reverse direction back to Buenos Aires in the same day.
