NEW AIRLINE PLANS: Azul Linhas Aereas planning Uruguayan subsidiary to be named Azul Uruguay

Azul ERJ-195LR, PR-AYD (c/n 247), on final approach to Rio de Janeiro Santos Dumont (SDU) on 13Aug12.  (Phil Perry Photo)

Azul Linhas Aereas of Brazil is planning to start a new Uruguayan subsidiary named Azul Uruguay in the second half of 2017.

The carrier would be registered as a Uruguayan company with Uruguayan employees and all of its flights originating or terminating in Uruguay.  Former PLUNA and Alas Uruguay staff would be the most likely to be hired.

One concern that the Azul management have, which would have to be addressed, is the long certification times that Alas Uruguay (18 months) and Amaszonas Uruguay (12 months) had to undergo before they were certified to operate by the DINACIA Uruguayan aviation authority.

One of the motivations for Azul to start the new subsidiary would be to generate more of the hard currency normally charged for international travel to offset the hard currency shortfall that the carrier currently has.  53% of Azul's costs in 2016 were in US dollars while only 10% of its revenues were in hard currencies with the other 90% being in Brazilian Reales which are more vulnerable to strong variations in exchange rates often resulting in higher costs for the carrier.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas to retire 5 remaining A340's by year-end 2018

Aerolineas Argentinas is due to retire its five remaining A340's by the end of 2018 with the aircraft being replaced in the short term by A330's with a longer term replacement, such as the 787 or A350, unlikely to be ordered prior to 2018 or 2019 due to financing issues.

The aircraft are scheduled to be retired from the Aerolineas fleet as follows:

A340-313X LV-CSF (c/n 128) in February 2017

A340-313X LV-CSX (c/n 373) in March 2017

A340-313X LV-CSD (c/n 123) in December 2017

The above three aircraft flew with Aerolineas for approx. five years having joined the carrier in late 2011 / early 2012.

A340-313X LV-FPV (c/n 193) in September 2018

A340-313X LV-FPU (c/n 170) in November 2018

The above two A340's flew for Aerolineas for about three years having been delivered to the airline in late 2013.

ROUTE UPDATES: LATAM Brazil, LATAM Chile & Azul

Santiago (SCL) - San Juan (UAQ) - eff 08Sep16 - 06Dec16

LATAM Chile operated this route 10x/weekly using A320's as a replacement for its normal Santiago (SCL) - Mendoza (MDZ) service while the latter airport was closed three months for major renovations, including to its runway. To the best of this blog editor's knowledge, this is the first and only time that San Juan (UAQ) has had scheduled international service.

Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU) - Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Bogota (BOG) - eff 15Dec16

Interestingly, LATAM Brazil operates this route and not LATAM Argentina. They fly it 5x/weekly using 767-300's.

Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Belo Horizonte (CNF) - eff 06Mar17

Azul Brazilian Airlines will start service to Argentina in March 2017 with flights from Buenos Aires to Belo Horizonte using ERJ 195's on a 1x/daily basis.

FLEET UPDATE: Andes Lineas Aereas reportedly to add 6th MD-80 and two used 737-800's

Andes Lineas Aereas of Salta will reportedly add MD-83, N926AV (c/n 49630/1591), to its fleet in February.  The aircraft, which currently operates mostly charter flights for Orange Air of Sanford, Florida, flew with Austral Lineas Aereas as LV-BEG for almost nine years between 2006 and 2015 after a nearly 17-year career with Spanair since its initial delivery in 1989.  It is a coming home of sorts to Argentina for the airplane after a two-year hiatus.

More significant is the news that Andes is looking to add two used 737-800's to its fleet in March with more to be added over time as replacements for its ageing MD-80 fleet. The airline hopes to have ten 737-800's by the end of 2017, presumably to operate some of the new routes that it applied for at the ANAC Argentine aviation authority's public route hearings on 27Dec16.  See this link to a previous posting for more details:

http://argentina-airline-news.blogspot.com.ar/2017/01/airline-route-update-andes-lineas.html

The 737-800 is a third-generation narrow body jet compared to the second-generation MD-80 Series. which is noisier and consumes considerably more fuel than the 737-800.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas order for 20 737-887 changed to 9 737-887 and 11 737 MAX 8

Aerolineas Argentinas announced on 19Dec16 that it had negotiated with Boeing to change its October 2013 order for twenty 737-887's to nine 737-887's and eleven 737 MAX 8's.  The original order called for deliveries to take place between October 2016 and 2018 with three 737-887's already having been delivered in the latter part of 2016.  Up to three of the six remaining 737-800's to be delivered may also be converted to 737 MAX 8's, which would mean that future deliveries of this order might consist of only three 737-887's and fourteen 737 MAX 8's.

Aerolineas' first two 737 MAX 8's will be delivered in November and December 2017 with the early delivery being made possible by the deferral of an Alaska Airlines order.  Later 737 MAX 8's will be delivered at as yet undetermined dates.

The 737 MAX 8 is a new subtype of the 737 with two 737 MAX 8's currently flying in the type's test program.  Both of them are painted in the colors of Southwest Airlines, which will be the first airline to take delivery of the new type in the middle of 2017.

Aerolineas Argentinas will be the first Latin American airline to place the 737 MAX 8 into service. COPA of Panama and GOL of Brazil are the other two Latin American airlines to have ordered the type and COPA was going to be the first to put it into service in 2018 until the Aerolineas order change took place.

The 737-MAX 8 typically costs US$ 5 million more than the 737-800 but Aerolineas' agreement with Boeing was not disclosed and might be different. The MAX 8 burns 20% less fuel than early 737-800's and 14% less than the most recent versions with typical annual savings of US$ 800,000 per aircraft over the 800 at current fuel prices.  This better fuel economy translates to more range for the MAX 8 allowing it to fly longer missions.  Also, the MAX 8 is 40% less noisy.

The reduction in fuel consumption is mainly due to the MAX 8's CFM56 LEAP-1B new-generation engines, Scimitar winglets, which reduce drag more than conventional winglets, and some rear fuselage redesign.

FLEET & ROUTE UPDATE: Third 767-300 rejoins LATAM Argentina Fleet to increase Ezeiza - Miami Flights to 11x/weekly

LATAM Argentina added a third 767-300 to its fleet on 17Nov16, LV-CFV (c/n 34629/944).  It joins sister ships LV-CDQ (c/n 35229/949) and LV-CKU (c/n 34628/945), enabling the carrier to add four new frequencies to its Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) - Miami (MIA) route for a total of 11x/weekly flights between the two cities.  The aircraft entered service on 24Nov16.

LV-CFV has flown its entire career for the LAN/LATAM group of companies since its initial delivery in 2006 with two previous stints in LAN Argentina service between 2010-11 and 2012-15.  It flew for LAN Airlines and LATAM Chile during all other periods.

FLEET UPDATE: Aerolineas Argentinas retired two A340's from its fleet in recent months

LV-CEK in the all-white scheme that it apparently wore throughout its career with Aerolineas Argentinas. (Phil Perry Collection)

Aerolineas Argentinas A340-312 - LV-CEK (c/n 094)

Departed Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Miami (MIA) on the evening of 05Sep16 arriving in Florida the following morning.  This aircraft was an early-build A340 having originally been delivered to Air Mauritius on 31Mar95 where it served for 15 years prior to joining Aerolineas on 17May10.

Aerolineas Argentinas A340-313X - LV-CSE (c/n 126)

Flew its last service with the airline on 14Sep16 and was apparently stored at Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) soon thereafter.  This example was delivered to Singapore Airlines on 24Apr96 and also flew for Cathay Pacific before joining Aerolineas on 08Jan12.

Both of the above A340's will be replaced by one of the many A330's that Aerolineas is due to receive in the coming years.

NEW AIRLINE PLANS: Norwegian Air Argentina created: Possible Plans to fly Domestic & International LCC Service

Norwegian Long Haul CEO Bjorn Kos and other company executives visited Argentina in early October and met with Argentine Minister of Tourism Gustavo Santos, Minister of Transport Guillermo Dietrich and Aeropuertos Argentinos 2000 CEO Eduardo Eurnekian to reportedly discuss proposed long-haul Low Cost Carrier (LCC) service by Norwegian from Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) to Oslo (OSL), London and Paris using 787-8's or 787-9's.

The airline's interest in operating low-cost domestic Argentine services initially appeared to be minimal due to the many hurdles to overcome in establishing such service but Mr. Kos and his colleagues were persuaded to visit Cordoba (COR) and Chubut during their visit to Argentina to get a better idea of important "interior" points of the country.

Norwegian attended the December 27 Route Hearing only as an "observer" but indications have been that the carrier would like to start LCC domestic service in Argentina in late 2017 with 6-10 737-800's or MAX 8's and 200-300 employees from bases in Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE) and Aeroparque (AEP) and Cordoba (COR), like so many other airlines due to its central Argentina location and being the second largest city in the country, plus possibly Mendoza (MDZ) too.

This was followed by the official registration of Norwegian Air Argentina on 26Jan17 capitalized with US$ 100,000 for 99 years with a board composed of three Argentine directors.
